At DALI, you can develop digital design, software development, and project management skills while partnering with community organizations to build solutions for real people.

We started this adventure in 2013 at Dartmouth College in response to student demand for real-world experience. We firmly believe that the best way to learn is by doing!

DALI started at Bates College in 2021 in partnership with the Harward Center. We wanted to offer the same unique experience of learning by building to Bates students, who are already fantastic advocates of their local community.

Now you have the opportunity to provide tangible solutions to community partners while augmenting your classroom learning and working closely with other creative peers!

Why DALI?

DALI members make a difference in the community.

They are curious, productively creative, and have a variety of skills.

They use their acquired skills to mentor their less experienced peers.

How it works:

  • DALI members are paid for their work. Stipends are provided by the Harward Center.

  • We learn as we build. You don’t have to know everything as you start, but you’ll know a lot more by the end of a project. Learning is self-driven and supported by mentors.

  • We work diligently. We research, design, develop and test iteratively and collaboratively to deliver products that meet the needs of our partners and improve the lives of their users.

  • The Lab is largely run by students. Peer mentors facilitate learning and product quality. Until Bates as a sufficient number of mentors and leadership on campus, DALIxDartmouth will help play these roles on project teams.

  • To augment DCS classes, DALIxDartmouth will provide basic code and design training through minicourses before Bates student teams are paired with a community partner.

We look for students who:

  • demonstrate that they are eager to learn new skills

  • can show us that they can learn things quickly

  • demonstrate initiative and self-learning by working on projects outside of classes

  • work well in a group

  • are enthusiastic to work in the lab!

  • will contribute 5-10+ hours/week to DALI

Tech Stacks / Frameworks we love:

At DALI, we use industry-standard tools and frameworks to build high-quality products. We have a forward-looking approach when choosing stacks that embraces promising technologies and leverages the aspects of particular stacks that are most beneficial to a given project.
